Preparing Your E-bike for Long-term Storage

When it comes to protecting and maintaining your e-bike, how you store it matters as much as how you ride it. An e-bike is an investment, and just by following these simple tips you can make your investment last longer. So how do you store an electric bike? Read below to learn all about how to store an e-bike.

Always clean your
e-bike first

The first step of properly storing your e-bike is to clean it. This is important for both indoor and outdoor storage, if you don’t want to deal with all the stuck dirt before you start to use your e-bike. Plus, the mechanical components of your e-bike can be harmed by the debris and dirt. Ensure that the dirt of the day’s ride is wiped away. And just remember that the longer you put it off, the harder it will be to clean.

For long-term storage for off-season, wash your e-bike before putting it into storage. Trust us, when the season starts again and you remove the cover of your e-bike after a long time, you will be glad that you cleaned it thoroughly.

Where you store your e-bike matters

Storing your e-bike in the correct place is one of the most important things in preventing it from getting damaged and extending its life span. Whether for the entire off-season or just one or two hours, you should choose where to store your e-bike properly.

If you have the chance to do so, store your e-bike in a cool, dry place, generally a place which is indoors. Beware of humidity since humid and moist places can harm your e-bike in the long term. If you will be storing your ride outdoors, consider covering it with a waterproof cover as the possible wet weather conditions will cause rust on the frame and chain, not to mention corrode the electrical components. And it doesn’t have to be rainy conditions -excess sunlight can also harm the electrical components of your e-bike which are UV sensitive. And for long-term storage definitely avoid outdoors.

If you have enough room for indoor storage for your e-bike, then you’re lucky. There are plenty of options for indoor storage wall mounts, including racks, hooks, and the posts -although they‘re not as popular as the first three. Generally, racks are considered the strongest option amongst all three. After choosing the storage solution which suits your needs the most, you have to make sure that you’ve found one with the right measurements according to your e-bike’s size. We must add that there are some good vertical bike racks in the market allowing your e-bike to be stored vertically, in case you don’t have enough indoor space for storage.

How to store your e-bike battery

Considering buying a new one will cost you from $50 to $300, you should take extra care of your battery storage. For outdoor storage, make sure you bring the battery inside and store it separately, if the battery of your e-bike is removable. For long-term storage, leave the battery of your e-bike partly charged (from 30 to 60%) and don’t forget to recharge it every few months.

The best temperature to store your e-bike battery

As high and low temperatures are bad for your e-bike, so too are constant temperature changes. This is especially crucial in preserving the lifespan of your e-bike battery. The ideal temperature to store your e-bike, at least the battery, is between 4 and 20 degrees Celsius, or between 40 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit.

Even this basic information will provide your e-bike with a better storage period. Follow these easy steps to enjoy your e-bike for many seasons to come!
